turkoman textiles

The Turkoman material on these pages was all collected over 25 years ago in northern Afghanistan and Kabul. These pieces were made by Ersari and Amy Darya Turkoman groups, whereas material currently on the international market is largely from the region of Turkmenistan. In contrast to the Turkmenistan materials, much of this early collection is characterized by virtuoso embroidery work and the use of the gul-i-badam, almond-flower design. We can provide more information and discuss the comparative rarity and integrity of this early collection. Read our article on Turkoman Embroidery, and also see an article from the British Museum Magazine on recent acquisitions of Turkoman material.
