Together with co-author Kate Fitz Gibbon, he has published numerous articles and three books on Central Asian art, focusing on photography, urban and nomadic textiles, architectural materials, Islamic metalwork, and the Central Asian Bronze Age. Their second book, Ikat: Silks of Central Asia, The Guido Goldman Collection, received the George Wittenborn Memorial Book Award for Best Art Book of 1997. Uzbek Embroidery in the Nomadic Tradition: The Jack A. and Aviva Robinson Collection for the Minneapolis Institute of the Arts was published in 2007.
